I Believe In God, That Means I’m OK, Right Pt. 2

I BELIEVE IN GOD, THAT MEANS I’M OK, RIGHT? PT. 2

Yesterday I introduced the title topic with the conviction that the answer to this question is no. I also gave the first reason for my position-even the devils believe in God and tremble. Believing with mere mental assent is not the type of faith God is looking for; He will not be patronized. He expects more.
Today, as I considered this topic, I thought about the question I usually ask when someone says- I believe in God. I pursue their statement with this query-Who is this God you say you believe? Is He a higher power? A supreme being? A force to be reckoned with? Who is this deity you say you have faith in? Do you think the God of the Bible accepts those notions or ideas about Him as right faith? Do you think God likes to be thought of as an idea or a concept or a philosophy of life? I would say no and here’s why:
God talks and reveals himself as personality, not in abstract terms. He uses terms such as I, Me, Us, My, Mine. Scripture talks this way of God revealing Himself. In mat. 6:26. Jas. 1;7- He talked about as being a Father, gen. 32:30- the face of God. Dt. 5:22-26- the voice of God, jn. 10:29, ps. 145:16- the hand of God. 2chr. 16:19. Ps. 33:18-the eye of God. Matt. 11:28-29- One who can be touched-come unto Me.
If you are to believe God rightly, you believe He is a Person, Persons more correctly. To relegate God as one more idea or one more “way of life” is to desecrate His very essence. It is to deny God and thus the one who denies this cannot be all right in God’s eyes, can he? Think on it, More tomorrow.

I Believe In God, That Makes Me Okay, Right? Pt. 1

April 25, 2007 by beatonpath

The title of today’s entry is a question I have been asked and had it stated as though it’s true. The question from here, then is this, does it make people okay with God just because they simply acknowledge His existence? The answer is no, and over the course of the next few weeks I hope to show anyone who reads this, why it is not.

I ‘ll tell you the first reason for you right now. In the book of James, chapter 2 verse 19, the author writes-You believe there is one God, You do well, Even the demons believe and tremble! Then he writes-”But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?” God is not looking for mere acknowledgement, He requires action behind the statement. The demons believe, but, you know where they are heading even though they acknowledge God exists! This should alert and clue people into realizing that God is not looking to be patronized, He demands absolute worship and solitary sway in your life. In other words, saying you believe is one thing, living what you say is another.

Over the course of the next few weeks, I hope to lay out just what biblical faith looks like when it comes to believing in God. I know far too many people who are on thin ice conerning their eternal destiny and I can’t and won’t sit idly by and watch them slip under the ice without warning them of the danger that comes with it.

Believing is more than just a mental assent of facts, it’s embracing what God says about Himself. May the following weeks be fruitful for all.

IT’S SIMPLE I KNOW

March 8, 2007 by beatonpath

I’m reading through the Psalms and I am in Psalm 147 right at the moment and today this verse stuck to me like glue for some reason- Who makes grass grow on the mountains(vs.8) This may seem insignificant and overly simple to some, but, I got fixated on this verse. God makes grass grow on the mountains. Mountains are made of rock-no kiddin’- and the only way grass could grow would be by divine fiat. Ever try to grow grass on your driveway or rock garden? Does it flourish? Even grow? We know in the lowlands and the foothills of the mountains, grass does grow, but, on the mountain?! Ever ask yourself why? Not too many families go to the mountains for picnics. We don’t lug the stroller, the cooler and lawn chairs up Mt. Rushmore or Mt. Hood or the Rockies to lay the blanket out on the grass. And yet, God has seen fit to have grass grow on mountains.

Further thought led to me to see the loving kindness and tenderness of God towards His creatures who dwell in the mountains. The mountain goat, the rams and ewes who live in the mountains are dependent upon that grass. If there were no grass, they would have to come down the mountain slopes and expose themselves to greater risk of attack from the bears and cougars. The adult and baby lambs would be out of their element and less likely to protect themselves. What grace and love has been extended to these animals by their Creator. This is so rudimentary, so simple, so obscure, really, but, so deep in its scope because it portrays a Benevolent God who has taken care of the smallest detail. Surely God is great in all His works!

Out of this microcosm comes another picture of God to view. If you are without Christ, then your heart is like the mountain- rocky and cold-no life(aka no grass). In and of itself, like the natural mountain, it is not able to produce life or sustain life without an outside source performing the necessary work to make it happen. I’ve looked at rocks, they don’t naturally produce grass; it needs help. Just as the mountain needed God’s miracle to produce the grass, so does your heart. It needs a miracle to change its disposition. Your heart is cold in sin towards God and needs to change. But; on its own it cannot, and will not unless something or someone changes it for you. Ezekiel 36:26 says God can take out your stony heart-one without Christ- and put in a heart of flesh-one with Christ. Then why don’t I have that, you may ask? Christ said, “You have not because you ask not.” Would you today, then, ask God to do that for you? He has promised not to deny or refuse any who come to Him with a repentant heart to have this miracle occur. Millions have come and yet there is still room for one. There’s room at the cross for you. Remember God is the Great Shepherd and is able to lead people to green pastures. May God make “grass” grow on the mountain of your heart.

One more thing- if you want to talk to me further about this; please contact me throught this forum. May you do so-today.

Stocks sink on fears about China and growth

On Tuesday, the die for the trading day was cast when China’s Shanghai Composite Index dropped almost 9 percent on fears that the government would crack down on speculation that has driven stock prices there to record highs.

Why do people think they really control anything at all? It’s sad, isn’t it, to watch people be controlled by money and fear… man that’s a deadly combination. Ask the relatives left from the 1929 crash- people literally threw themselves over the cliff because all was lost. Today’s frenzy on Wall Street really showed me what I already suspected- there is something to fear about fear itself. To have one’s life controlled by another continent sounds much like bondage, rather than financial freedom; doesn’t it? Does this image look as though all is well with those who make a living by making money?

A trader on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange holds his head in his hand during the closing minutes of the trading session in New York, February 27, 2007. U.S. stocks plummeted on Tuesday, sending the benchmark S and P 500 index to its biggest one-day slide in more than 3-1/2 years as a sell-off in China's equity market fanned worries that stock valuations there are too high and some data indicated U.S. economic growth may slow. (Mike Segar/Reuters)

What kind of advice can one give here? What is the “moral” of the story? What can you and I learn from this? The need of taking to heart these words in Proverbs 23: 4Labor not to be rich: cease from your own wisdom. 5Will you set your eyes on that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven. Paul wrote to his young prtoege,Timothy, that the love of money, not money, is the root of all evil. He gave him a truism for all – we brought nothing into this world, you will certainly take out with you when you leave. However; I think the vast majority believe just the opposite or they would not try so hard to get it, would they?

If I could have the email of every investor today, who by and through fear, no doubt, lost their shirt, I would send them this one verse of warning- I Timothy 6: 9But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. Jesus was right, you know, when He said those who build their lives on sand-aka money, will be washed away when the storms of life come crashing in. However, lives do not need to perish in the storms of life. The answer? Those who build their lives on the ROCK, aka, Jesus Christ, need not fear what happens in China or their back yard because their lives are hidden in the cleft of the ROCK who is able to weather any storm.

One parting thought- if money is the answer to life problems, why were there so many people today looking as though they have none?

I SAW GOD TODAY

February 15, 2007 by beatonpath

It is my hope these thoughts bless your day. Every once and in awhile I see something that sparks my synaspes to fire and this is the end product.

I SAW GOD TODAY

SOME SAY GOD IS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND
SINCE THERE IS SO MUCH DEATH, SUFFERING AND MISERY
HOW COULD ONE DARE SAY GOD IS AROUND
AND BELIEVE HIM IN THE 21ST CENTURY.

PEOPLE WHO SPOUT THIS; I DARE SAY
ARE NOT REALLY PAYING MUCH ATTENTION
BECAUSE I SAW WITH MINE OWN EYES; GOD TODAY
MOVING HIS HAND IN THE MIDST OF HIS CREATION

WHERE DID YOU SEE HIM?! I WANT TO KNOW
AND WHY WOULD YOU POSTULATE SUCH A NOTION
BUT, I DID, YOU SEE, AS I WATCHED HIS HAND RIPPLING THE SNOW
BACK AND FORTH WITH HIS LITTLE WHIRLWIND IN DESIGNED MOTION.

OH, I SEE, AS YOU CHUCKLE AT MY NAVIETE
THAT WAS MERELY CAUSED BY CHANCE
SO. YOU COULDN’T HAVE SEEN GOD TODAY
AND,BESIDES, NO ONE REALLY BELIEVES SUCH NONESENSE.

OH, NOW, I THINK I COMPREHEND
WHY YOU ONLY SEE DEATH, SUFFERING AND MISERY
AND WHY NOTHING MAKES SENSE IN THE END
‘CAUSE YOU REALLY BELIEVE HE’S NOT IN THE 21ST CENTURY.

BUT. MY FRIENDS, I DID, I DID SEE GOD TODAY
AS HE MOVED HIS HAND ACROSS THE SNOW
RIPPLING IT THIS WAY AND THAT WAY
AND IF I DARE SAY MYSELF, IT WAS QUITE A SHOW..

HOW ABOUT LETTING JESUS BUILD HIS OWN CHURCH?

February 14, 2007 by beatonpath

I freely admit this column or maybe the right word for today, tirade, was probably engineered by a book I read recently called, This Little Church Stayed Home by M. Gilley. In this book(one I recommend you read) he calls for the church to start staying “home” with what scripture says Christianity and the church is all about.

Well, as “luck” would have it, I got to thinking and that’s always a dangerous beginning for me in any venture, didn’t Christ say, ” I will build my church”? He also said, that even hell would not prevent the building of it either. The question, is this, just how He is doing it? He’s certainly not waving a “magic wand” or doing it through divine fiat pronouncments from on high. This much is pretty clear, I think, for all of us to see. So, how is He building this strong, powerful church? Through the preaching of the gospel of His disciples. Yup, ones like me. One who was once not on His side AT ALL, but, now is one who really can’t keep his mouth quiet for long without bringing the discussion around to the necessity of being converted to Jesus Christ. This is pretty simple, not too glamorous, but, because He empowers it, it works. By the way, are you a Christian? Are you saved by the blood of the Lamb? Do you know you need to be saved because until you are you are an enemy of God? The good news is, that can change in a heartbeat, acknowledge Jesus Christ as the only Savior of men and receive His work as the only payment God will accept as satisfying His wrath against sin. You see, it isn’t rocket science, it’s merely the gospel truth, Christ came into the world to save sinners.

Call me simple, call me stupid, but, for centuries the gospel worked for Peter, Paul, Luther, Calvin, Spurgeon, Hudson Taylor, John Piper, Alistair Begg; and the list could go on for eons. Why is it then, the church seems to think it needs to improve the “product?” Why is it churches today across this land of ours cling to every fad that comes along and finds itself bankrupt financially and spiritually every time in the end? Didn’t Jesus say, “If someone says I over here, or that He’s in the wilderness or some othe place, not to go there”? I think so; and yet the church is so eager to leave the gospel for some type of “new appoach” to win the world. It’s the gospel that has the power unto salvation, not some passing methodology. Does the church want purpose? How about lining up with Christ in His- preach the gospel. If you want to “emerge”, how about emerging on the world with actual conviction that Christ’s gospel is actually true! Want to be “missional”? How about simply talking to your neighbor about Christ? Ask how they are doing, ask lovingly, be genuinely concerned about them. A little love goes a long way. Be a neighbor.

The church has always thought they could build the church for Christ. The tried it through the building of monasteries and “communities”, now it thinks it can build it by giving everybody what they want or thinks makes “good church”. The church has taken the words-Be Revelant!and have run scared with it. Who said the church was irrevelant to society? Did God say that? Who told us, the church, we needed to be “user friendly” or “seeker sensitive”? The world? The outsiders? You mean the ones who nailed Christ to the cross because He didn’t give them what they wanted? You mean the ones who left Him because what He said was too hard to swallow? The ones who don’t like the message of- “I am the way, the truth, and the life and no gets to the Father except through Me. You means those guys?! They are the ones screaming at the church, saying, the church is irrevelant because it dares to simply repeat what Christ said?

<>Personally, I think the church of America and Canada, wants to build the church because it’s afraid and ashamed of the one Christ is building. No easy believeism, no wealth and health gospel, the only purpose that matters to Him is His. He stands on His absolute word and it’s not debatable. In His church, men follow Him, not their dreams. In His church the preachers actually preach the gospel, not stories, call people to repentance, not intellectual acknowledgement and tell people they serve Christ because they have been drafted into His service- there are no volunteers in His army. The church Christ is building is not by the consultants but His way.

<>I think history proves this out- Whenever the church tries to be “liked by the world”, it isn’t long before it’s taken over by the world. So, how about letting Christ build His church.

DO HAVE FAITH TO COMPLAIN?

February 7, 2007 by beatonpath

If I it heard once, I’ve heard it a thousand times, “What’s the use of complaining, no one listens to me anyways.” I take exception to this, I think a Christian can complain, so long as he or she complains to the right person. Psalm 142 verse says, “I pour out my complaint before the Lord.” You notice, David, said he poured out his complaint before the Lord, not about the Lord. I am drawn to the book of Psalms because of the brutal honesty, the raw faith, confidence and boldness before the Lord. They were not afraid; nor were they ashamed, of expressing themselves in prayer to the Lord. They had faith in their relationship with the Lord. The background to Psalms 142 is that David is constantly running for his life from his nemesis, King Saul. Think about it, David is constantly to wet, cold caves, sleeping on the cold, damp cavern floors and at any time his life may be snuffed out by a madman. Honestly, this would get old after awhile, wouldn’t it? , especially if you did nothing to deserve the treatment!! What does David do- he prays! How does he pray? Truthfully. He simply opens his heart before the Lord. He complains to God, not to men and he does not badmouth God before men. There’s a difference between the two, you know.

The question I find asking myself is this- why am I so plastic in prayer? Why do I pretend that all is well and I kind of like being shortchanged; especially when God knows my heart may be seething, or raging or is made very uneasy by the cirucmstances of life? What do I think my heavenly Father do to me? Punish me? Club me? Or do what many have done in my life- walk out on me once He knows I can’t handle something or get upset enough to tell the truth? Am I that afraid to vocalize something He already knows? What kind of con job am I playing on myself?

Look, complaining is being honest and the key to effective prayer is truthfulness and faith; Faith in knowing your God. Faith in knowing He will not blow a gasket when you tell Him- I do not like my circumstances right now and I am troubled about it. Do something God! Elijah complained about being the last true prophet in the land. Jonah whined about the saving of Nineveh. Did God wipe them out? No; He did not. Go before the Lord and tell Him what’s on your heart, be truthful not plastic or phoney- He does know the difference.

This man, David, puts the reason out on the table for why he was so forthright with God and why you can be- “No one cares for my soul except You, Lord. vs 4 of 142. The Apostle Peter said the same thing in his letter- Cast all your cares upon Him, for He cares for you. I want this relationship with the Lord. It’s speaks of freedom, not, bondage. It speaks of liberty, not fear. It talks of knowing someone, not just about the person. Do I have faith to complain like David? Is my relationship with the Lord this personal that I know no matter what He will never leave nor forsake me. Something to think about, isn’t?

I REMEMBER WHEN

January 31, 2007 by beatonpath

Today I am feeling in a poetic mood and I would like to share, yet another poem, I wrote a while back. It was written at a time when I was reminded of my life before Christ due to a uncaring remark by someone. I had experiernced my share of those over the years as a child and as a teenager I was a recluse due to a speech impediment caused by a loss of hearing as an infant. I saw no future as a young person, no sense of direction and to me life lacked meaning, I contemplated suicide a couple of times, but, instead I tried to drown out my sorrows in alcohol. I slept most of the day because I was up all night staring out my bedroom window çhain smoking till I could no longer stay awake. However, as Charles Wesley wrote-Long lay my imprisoned spirit lay Fast bound in sin and nature’s night, Thine eye diffused an quickning ray I woke -the dungeon flamed with light! My chains fell off and heart was free, I rose, went forth and followed Thee. The following is what I captured from being His.

I REMEMBER WHEN

I REMEMBER THOSE NIGHTS IN MY ROOM
WHEN ALL I COULD SEE IS GLOOM AND DOOM.
I REMEMBER THEM, OH, SO WELL
BUT; THEY ARE NO LONGER MY CELL

YOU SEE I WAS A MAN ALL ALONE;
UNTIL ONE DAY GOD LOOKED DOWN FROM HIS THRONE
AND FILLED MY LIFE WITH HIS LIGHT
AND NOW, I LIVE EACH DAY IN THE POWER OF HIS MIGHT.

OH I HAVE MY UPS AND DOWNS;
AND ONCE IN AWHILE I GET FROWNS.
NEVERTHELESS, I KNOW NOTHING IS THE END;
BECAUSE JESUS IS MY FRIEND.

IN HIM I NOW LIVE
AND THE GLORY TO HIM I GIVE
FOR HE LIFTED ME FROM THE MIRY CLAY
AND PLACED ME IN HIS HAND TO STAY.

WHAT HAPPENED IS NOT FOR ME ALONE.
FOR GOD WOULD HAVE YOU AS HIS OWN.
THERE’S NO REASON TO STAY IN THE DARK
WHEN CHRIST CAN GIVE YOU A BRAND NEW START.

LIFE-SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL-PSALM 139:13-16

January 30, 2007 by beatonpath

13 For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb.14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.16 Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them.

<>
As I launch deeper into this psalm, I find myself being overwhelmed by the majesty and personal nature of God. I refer back to the wonder of God having laid His hand upon David’s life and mine and muse over the awesomeness of such a reality. But, here, in this one little verse-13 For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb, has really floored me. I began to think, if every man and woman would stop and consider what is destroyed when the decision to terminate life is made, would they? There’s only One Giver of life, One Craftsman and as David points out in verse 16- there was a plan fashioned for that life. Friends, God has laid His hand upon an individual’s life, your life, long before you realized it. God sees every life as precious, as being meaningful and no matter how that life had come into form, it should have the right to live. Every one should be thinking- what kind of plan did God have for this little one? What would He have done in this life to bring Him glory? When life is terminated, so is the plan. Only heaven knows what would’ve been and those on earth have missed out. If one could see how children are supposed to come into this world, perhaps decisons would be made differently.

<>David opens a window to something strange to this culture of ours. In verse 15 he pens-15 My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret. I need not be lewd here by being explicit, as we all know what he is referring to. In our day and age, this type of discretionary speech is considered restrictive, old fashioned, puritanical; and to some, just plain outrageous to suggest modesty. Our society wants everyone to see what should be a private and precious between a husband and wife. TV, movies, magazines, “reality shows” and the like have cheapened a gift of God by displaying it like a KMart blue light special. Cheap stuff that has no lasting value and can be thrown away. How crass the world is when it comes to this issue. How, then, Christian can we make this a holy matter in our lives once more. No, how can I make this a holy matter in my life? Maybe, just maybe I need to learn to blush again at the crude and gross humor surrounding this matter. Maybe, just maybe I need to turn off the TV, change the channel and not watch what I know defiles the mind. Perhaps I need to make a covenant with my eyes and ears once more before God to and for His glory. I should be asking myself the hard questions- have I become like the world in that I no longer see God’s beauty and instead just a “natural act”? How can I teach my son correctly if all I do is fast forward the “bad scenes”? Being holy in this area isn’t being prudish, it’s remembering -14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.

In all of this, I have pondered-”what kind of path have I beaten? Am I still in awe of God even in this? Am I still able to see the handiwork of God in what the world calls a “fetus” or “a piece of tissue” that I have the power to play “god” with? May God help me walk my Beaton Path differently and holy from this point on…

YOU ARE ON HIS MIND-PSALM 139:17-18

January 29, 2007 by beatonpath

PS. 139:17How precious are Your thoughts towards me, O God. How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand. When I awake I am with you.

God has you, believer on His mind. He’s thinking about me. How does one truly contemplate on such?! Can you catch the grandeur and splendor of such a statement? How precious is this. David said God’s thoughts are precious towards His own. Does this boggle your mind or what?! Jeremiah 29:11 records God saying to Israel, even in the midst of their blatant, idolatrous, sinful rebellion, “for I know the thoughts I think towards you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not evil, to give a future with a hope ” This connects with earlier verses concerning the omnipresence of God- He’s everywhere you go perfecting His plan. Is this not illustrated in the Prodigal Story in Luke? The father runs to the prodigal son as he saw him afar off. You mean to tell me this father was not thinking about his son. Wondering where he was? What was he doing, how was he doing? The father has him in mind, and you Father does also.

God has every right to not give you or me a second thought. After all He is the high and lofty one, and yet, this psalm clearly states- God thinks about you. How comforting is that? Think about it- the world has billions of people, there are wars, rumors of war, and many clamoring for His attention, and yet He has chosen to think about you as an individual. These are not spurious or off the cuff thoughts either. Verse 16 says even before you were born, He gave careful thought as to what your life would entail, how it would play out for His glory and for your good. They were all planned out, thought upon in eternity. Oh great is the sum of them! Are you getting it? Am I getting it? Do I understand the magnitude of this- God thinks about me.

I am flabberghasted by this whole thing, aren’t you? I found a poem I had written in 1989 and never shared it with anyone, other than my wife, but I think it appropiate now.

WHAT FILLED HIS DAY?
HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED ABOUT THE THOUGHTS OF GOD?
AND HOW HE GOES ABOUT DOING THINGS
DID YOU EVER WONDER WHAT FILLED HIS DAY?
OR IF HE WAS LOOKING YOUR WAY?

PERHAPS YOU JUST TOO BUSY TO STOP AND THINK,
OR MAYBE YOUR ARE ABOVE THAT SORT OF THING?
COULD IT BE YOU HAD OTHER THINGS ON YOUR MIND
AND HE WAS THE LAST THING YOU WOULD THINK ABOUT?

DID YOU KNOW YOU WERE FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE?
DID THAT THOUGHT EVER CROSS YOUR MIND TODAY?
MAYBE IT WOULD BE WORTH YOUR WHILE TO CONSIDER;
JUST HOW SPECIAL YOU REALLY ARE.

HE’S EVER WATCHING YOU KNOW.
NOT TO SPY,BUT, BECAUSE HE CARES.
DID YOU EVER STOP AND THINK ABOUT THAT?
MAYBE YOU SHOULD; YOU MIGHT BE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED.

PERHAPS NO ONE TOLD YOU ABOUT HIS GREAT LOVE;
BUT IT’S NEVER TOO LATE, YOU KNOW, LET IT FILL YOUR HEART.
THEN, MAYBE, YOU WOULD WONDER ABOUT THE THOUGHTS OF GOD AND WHAT FILLED HIS DAY.
